Mert lake, also known as the Koca lake, is a lagoon lake. The lake is separated from the Black Sea with a dune. However, with the rise of the waters, lake occasionally joins to the Black Sea. It is surrounded by the town of İğneada in the north, and Yıldız Mountains in the west and south. The forest area in this region is flooded during periods of abundant rainfall, especially in spring and autumn. For this reason, this region is also known as Mert Longoz (Koca Longoz). Located away 1 km south from İğneada Town, the lake has an area of 222 hectares. 178 hectares of this area is covered with reeds (Phragmites australis L.) and the deepest part is 1,5 meters. Mert Lake is fed by the Deringeçit Stream located in its northwest.
