Description:

Dupnisa Cave System is located 6 km southwest of Sarpdere Village of Demirköy town, close to the Bulgarian border. The cave was formed as a result of the marble formations’ erosion during the Toarcian age of the Early Jurassic epoch, dating back to around 180 Ma. The total length of the Dupnisa Underground System is 3150 m and consists of two layers and three interconnected caves; Dupnisa Cave (Sulu Kol), Kuru Cave and Kız Cave. Edirne Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board, with the decision number 6962 published in 2001, reduced the protection status of the Dupnisa Cave System from the 1st degree Natural Protection Area to the second degree, which enabled the cave to be used for tourism purposes. The protection zone, spread over a total area of 1.68 hectares, remained as a first-degree Natural Protection Area from 1992 to 2001. With the change in the protection status, Dupnisa Cave (Sulu Kol) and a part of Kuru Cave were opened to tourism.
